BIOMECHANICAL ASSESSMENTS: Foot and lower limb function
The foot and lower limb are very complex structures, yet we abuse them and take them for granted. Many people develop foot and or leg pain and they believe that it will go away on its own, however often they can become chronic. It is only then that they seek professional help. It is common for lower back, hip or knee pain to be caused by mechanical problems in the feet.

When undergoing a biomechanical assessment the Podiatrists (Chiropodist) assesses the effect of standing, walking and even running on the feet and how it affects the lower limb, lower back and posture

General conditions commonly needing such an assessment are:
Heel Pain
Arch pain
Plantar fasciitis
Flat feet
Ankle pain
Shin splints Calf pain
Hip pain
Knee pain
Iliotibial band syndrome
Buttock pain
Lower back pain
Postural problems
Leg length differences

Treatments commonly include:
  • Stretching and strengthening exercises
  • Specific shoe and trainer recommendations
  • Mobilisation techniques
  • Dry needling (acupuncture) and steroid injections for pain relief
  • Off the shelf orthoses (the term used to describe a foot or insole support
  • Prescription / custom made orthoses
  • Further investigations including x rays, diagnostic ultra – sound, MRI etc

What do you need to bring with you for an assessment?
You are advised when having a biomechanical examination to bring shorts and a T shirt, shoes /trainers that are commonly worm (not a pair of new shoes / trainers). We will use orthotics and insoles to correct alignment of the foot.
